Finance Officer

(30 hours per week, £18,070 to £20,661 pro rata)

The town council is seeking an individual to carry out the majority of its finance function and so must have a good working knowledge of accounts, ideally but not necessarily in the local government sector.  The post requires excellent financial and numeracy skills, the ability to work to deadlines and always with attention to detail.

About the post:

The post is a pivotal role within the town council, ensuring that the council’s accounts are updated promptly and accurately, with management reports and information provided to officers and to the relevant council or committee meeting.  Monitoring budgets and carrying out core tasks such as reconciliations and budget review, the post supports the range of services provided by the town council.

The post will be based in the Guildhall, in the centre of St Ives.

About you:

You will be qualified to at least AAT Level 3 (ideally AAT Level 4 or higher).  Alternatively, you will be able to demonstrate that your experience in working in accounts is at this level.

You will have significant experience using IT packages, including Excel and, ideally, familiarity with at least one accounts software package.  You will have an aptitude for accounts based work, possess excellent financial and numeracy skills, and work within deadlines but still with attention to detail.

With an ability to work as part of a team committed to providing a high level of customer service while adhering to budgets, you will be enthusiastic and be keen to develop your skills and your career.

About the town council:

St Ives Town Council wants to provide high quality, value-for-money services for the residents of and visitors to St Ives, Halsetown, Carbis Bay and Lelant.  Its income is derived from the precept and generated through income streams including retail sales, ticket sales, hire of halls, wedding ceremony packages and rental of commercial properties.  The expenditure of the council is similarly varied and in addition to staffing costs, cleaning and maintenance contracts, operating costs of buildings and the cost of utilities, the council is proactive in its approach and so there are a variety of projects in development.

The Town Council is growing.  It is already responsible for the town’s public toilets, the Visitor Information Centre, the Guildhall & concert hall, the Island Community Centre and two historic chapels.  It is currently in discussions with Cornwall Council to achieve the transfer of the St Ives Library as part of the ongoing process of devolution.
