Library Christmas Events

  • November 16, 2021

If you are looking for some inspiring and fun events for December, come to St Ives Library where you can create Christmas decorations, a beautiful winter story box, enjoy an evening of cinnamon spiced tales and sing carols until your hearts content.

Come out of the cold and spend a couple of hours creating your own winter shadow story box with artist Melanie Young on Saturday 11th December. Melanie is an artist based in Cornwall, who has exhibited her work both in the UK and internationally. Her work has been showcased in large exhibitions and art fairs, such as the Saatchi Other Art Fair. She is currently represented by Agora Gallery in New York.

Melanie will be running two workshops 10am and 1:30pm, which are suitable for anybody aged 12+. Due to the nature of the workshop spaces are limited, so advance booking essential and all tickets £10.

“It’s always a delight to see what wonderful imagery can be created when imaginations run wild – snowflakes,  bare spikey branches of trees, birds flying in the cold sky. These workshops are great fun, and once you know how to make them, a simple but effective way to illuminate your home. We’ve also an opportunity for the story lanterns to then form part of the setting for the ‘Dark Nights Stories and Songs’ performance the following Friday 17th participants can take them home afterwards – it would be lovely to light up the library with our collective lanterns!”  Melanie Young .

On Friday 17th December, the library will be hosting it’s first evening event in long time when it welcomes the extraordinary talents of Annamaria Murphy and The Story Republic  performing ‘Dark Nights Stories and Song’s ‘ an evening of an evening of cinnamon spiced tales.

Annamaria Murphy is artistic director of The Story Republic and one of Cornwall’s leading writers ( Radio 4, Kneehigh Theatre ) of stories inspired by Cornwall’s rich and varied communities which she captures with her own distinctive humour and slightly wicked delight! The Story Republic are an ensemble of performers who perform widely at events and festivals.  They have recently returned from sea-tossed adventures in the Isles of Scilly. Their repertoire is a rich medley of stories, poems and gorgeous harmonies inspired Cornwall, many written by Anna but also other contemporary writers as well as the great Charles Causley. They are renowned for their wit, glamour and alluring storytelling.

The library will be open from 6pm for wine, mince pies and book browsing with the performance starting at 7pm. Tickets are £12 adults and £8 under 12’s. For those interested in both workshop and evening performance there is a saving of £2 if you book at the same time.

The Friends of St Ives Library will be offering not one but two fabulously festive ‘Super Saturdays’  in December! The first on 4th when everyone is invited to come along and Make Christmas Decoration ‘with local artist Jo McIntosh and for Carol Singing on 18th December, both events between 10am and 12:30pm and with  lashings of tea and cake!
