From the 17th November 2025 there will be a 12-month trial of changes to routes through and around the centre of St Ives. The aim is to try to reduce and improve the flow of traffic through the town centre in an effort to mitigate the conflicts and environmental impact that currently exists.
Key proposals are set out below, but in general the main change which road users will experience is in the direction of traffic flow and will need to consider changes to their routes. The proposals have been shared and consulted upon for some time by Cornwall Council. The final stage of consultation will be to implement the proposed changes, and test them over a period of 12 months and evaluate the impact.
The changes are:
• Tregenna Hill: No entry via the Malakoff and the Terrace (except for buses, emergency services & RNLI On Call)
• Dove Street: Entry restriction at the Western Hotel end
• Bedford Road: No right turn on to High Street
• Albert Road: One way towards Park Avenue
• Park Avenue: One way towards the Stennack
Marshalls will be on relevant streets for the first 2 weeks of the trial period.
This is an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO) which is a legal document that allows local authorities to temporarily implement and test changes to road usage, such as restrictions on traffic or parking. The use of an ETRO means that Cornwall Council as Highways Authority can make modifications throughout the trial period, responding agilely to specific issues or concerns that are observed.
