At its last meeting, the Town Council made the important decision to take ownership of all the public benches in the parish. Over 200 benches are currently owned and maintained by Cornwall Council. But due to a lack of funding, some of the benches have fallen into disrepair. The Town Council’s aim is to breathe life back into local benches and ensure that the Town can take pride in them.
Improving the benches won’t happen overnight. Cornwall Council is sharing survey information and the first task will be to review the most important benches which are in desperate need to repair, repainting or replacement. These first ones can be tackled this Summer. The Council will then draw up a longer programme of maintenance.
To help with this challenge, the Council is looking for people with handy person, painting or woodwork skills who may be interested in casual work this Summer with the facilities team work on outdoor projects, including benches. Please see the job vacancies page for more information or to apply.
The Council will publicise the hand over date when the agreement has been signed. In the meantime, if you have any comments or information about the benches, you can contact us at a new dedicated email address benches@stives-tc.gov.uk
