History of the St Ives Library Building

The foundation stone of the two-storey St Ives Public Library was laid in April 1896 by John Passmore Edwards, the Cornish philanthropist, and benefactor. He provided £2,000 for the building, which replaced five cottages at the corner of The High Street and Gabriel Street. Passmore Edwards’ object was to improve the education of the working-class people of St Ives. He also provided £100 for the original book stock.

The building was handed over to the Corporation of St Ives on 1st January 1897, and shortly after opened to the public as a lending library. Nearly 2,000 people borrowed books in its first year. In addition, the Library was used to help a large number of people to be trained to read. From as early as 1899, some rooms were used as Council Offices.

About the artist

Camilla Dixon (b1968) is a multidisciplinary artist based in St Ives. Graduating from Central St Martins in Fashion Design in 1993, she worked as a freelance illustrator for the press, fashion and music industries, including clients such as The Times, Paris Vogue, Sony and Kylie Minogue. In 2000, Proportion London produced a mannequin based on her collage fashion illustrations for Elle magazine and Figaro Japan, which sold so well that she was able to leave London for Naples, to focus on her own work. This was the beginning of a new direction, away from the repetitive nature of illustration and promotion of commerce, towards activism and the experimental use of waste materials to communicate ideas. In 2004 Camilla left Naples for Cornwall and finally St Ives, where she teaches short courses at St Ives School of Painting, is a Senior Lecturer on BA Fashion Design at Falmouth University and runs Drawing Sundays, from her studio in St Ives Guildhall. She has held solo shows in London, Copenhagen, Naples, Truro and St Ives.

This participatory event is for anyone who loves poetry. Ideally you have poems to share and would like to discover the work of other poets. No experience needed, just bring your interest and maybe a few poems to read and discuss. We’ll begin by exploring the language of poetry and end by trying to find some answers to the question “What is Poetry?” and trying out comic verse. Included in the cost of admission is a pamphlet containing a selection of poems by members and associates of the St Ives Poetry Group.
