In March 2026 the Town Council put itself forward to be assessed by a group of officers and councillors from other local authorities in an initiative led by the Local Government Association and the National Association of Local Councils.
The three day assessment is an opportunity to receive constructive criticism and feedback from fellow professionals who observe their day-to-day performance, communication, and collaboration skills. The review team spent time with Council staff and Councillors, talked to other councils we work with and important local partners, businesses and voluntary organisations. As part of the review, the Council commits to receive the feedback in a positive spirit and to a 12 month action plan, drawn up from any recommendations the team make.
The assessment comments on the Council’s development and ambition with notable achievements in terms of taking on places and spaces for the community, delivering new services an important projects and working well in partnership. It also notes challenges for the future in developing a new longer term plan, improving performance management and business planning and building on community consultation.
