The reopening represents the first completed element of the project to be returned to the community. The newly landscaped forecourt carefully balances the heritage of the Guildhall with modern accessibility, improving the functionality and appearance of the space while enhancing the experience of arriving at one of St Ives’ most iconic buildings.
Designed to work with the natural slope of Street-An-Pol, the new forecourt creates two distinct and usable levels, providing fully accessible entrances to both the Guildhall and Concert Hall. The granite paving has been carefully matched to preserve the character of the historic building, while new features include a raised area with a heavy-duty Christmas tree base, upgraded power infrastructure for festive displays and event lighting, and a new sculpture plinth awaiting the return of Barbara Hepworth’s iconic cast bronze sculpture Dual Form. With site fencing removed and level access restored, the renewed space will once again provide a focal point for community celebrations and traditions, from weddings to catching pennies and returning the silver ball at Feast.
With the forecourt nearing completion, attention will now turn to finishing the side extension and the new enclosed portico, completing the transformation of the Guildhall’s public-facing spaces. Local contractor Symons continues to make progress as momentum builds towards the reopening of the reimagined Guildhall venue – planned for the Spring of 2027. The return of the forecourt is a significant step forward and a glimpse of what’s to come, with excitement growing for a renewed Guildhall that will once again serve as a vibrant home for community life, culture and entertainment in St Ives.
The Guildhall forecourt is planned to reopen to the public on Friday 18th September 2026.
