The reopening of the forecourt marks the first completed phase of the project. The newly landscaped space preserves the Guildhall’s historic character while improving accessibility and providing a more welcoming entrance to one of St Ives’ most iconic buildings.
Working with the natural slope of Street-An-Pol, the new forecourt creates two levels, providing fully accessible entrances to both the Guildhall and Concert Hall. The granite paving has been carefully matched to complement the character of the historic building, and new features include a raised area with a heavy-duty Christmas tree base, upgraded power infrastructure for events and festive displays, and a sculpture plinth awaiting the return of Barbara Hepworth’s iconic bronze sculpture Dual Form.
With site fencing removed, the renewed forecourt will once again provide a focal point for community celebrations and traditions, from weddings and penny throwing to the returning of the silver ball at Feast. Its reopening is a significant moment for the Guildhall project, with the focus now shifting to the completion of the remaining works inside the building.
Looking ahead to its planned reopening in spring 2027, the Guildhall is set to once again become a vibrant centre for community life, culture, and entertainment in St Ives.
The Guildhall forecourt is planned to reopen to the public on Friday 18th September 2026.
