Following Friday’s fire (4 December 2020), the Town Council is issuing the following interim statement. Please note that this is still a rapidly changing situation and we await further information from Cornwall Council.
- The property has been inspected by the dangerous structures team from Cornwall Council building control. A report is provided to the owner on what measures are needed to make the building safe.
- Discussions are taking place between Cornwall Council and the building owner as to how this will be done as quickly as possible.
- In the meantime, please can we ask that people, however curious, NOT to try to pass the barriers to look inside and stay well away from the building until suitable safety measures have been put in place.
- The traffic situation is frustrating but it is not possible to confirm how long the road closure at Lifeboat Hill will remain in place because Highways cannot lift it until the building has been made safe. They will be making effort to ensure that this happens quickly.
- In the meantime, the advice is to limit as much as possible all vehicle journeys into town, use the carparks, travel on foot etc.
- Where journeys are essential, the one way traffic direction on Fore Street has been reversed. Vehicles should ONLY travel the wrong way up Fore Street at slow speeds using their hazard lights as pedestrians may not be aware.
- Sections of Wharf Road may be used in both directions but, again, it is strongly encouraged that this is only for essential deliveries. Vehicles are asked to take extreme care in reversing, use hazard lights and be aware at all times of the presence of pedestrians and other road users.
Thank you for your understanding.
