On Friday, 18th November, Barnabas received its new tiller… Barnabas is an extraordinary survivor from the heyday of fishing; a living representative of St Ives’ maritime heritage. The fishing lugger was built in 1881 and launched from Porthgwidden Beach. The evening was a wonderful celebration of the fishing community of St Ives. The Deputy Mayor of St Ives, Councillor Johnnie Wells said, “We are thrilled to be able to give a community grant to this project. Helping to preserve this beautiful boat ensures that we continue to celebrate our proud heritage and roots in the fishing industry, lest they are forgotten”
