Commencing the week of 3rd March 2025, National Grid will carry out essential works to address a fault discovered on the incoming supply as part of the project development works. These upgrades must be completed before St Ives Archive fit-out can begin, ensuring the space is fully prepared for its exciting new chapter.
To facilitate these works safely, a temporary road closure will be in place outside the main entrance of Market House for the duration of the week. There will be redirection of traffic in place to minimise disruption, further details to follow. We appreciate the patience and support of the community while the National Grid completes these essential works.
The St Ives Archive, established in 1996, has operated from three different locations over the years. Its move to Market House marks a significant milestone, securing a permanent, centrally located home that will enhance accessibility, increase visitor engagement, and provide a sustainable future for the archive and its important collections.
The Town Council has worked closely with the Archive throughout this project to ensure the sensitive restoration and reuse of this key heritage building in the heart of St Ives. A carefully planned programme of works has been developed to upgrade Market House, making it fit for the future while preserving its historic character. Improvements include the installation of a lift, a more suitable replacement for the later-added staircase, an accessible ground-floor toilet, and a renovated research room upstairs. A bespoke, purpose-built archive storage system will also be installed to house the collection efficiently within the space.
This project has been made possible through funding from the Community Ownership Fund and the Town Deal Enterprise Grant Fund.
We look forward to welcoming the St Ives Archive into its new home and thank the community for their ongoing support as we prepare this historic space for the future.
