2022 is the 40th Anniversary of the friendship between Camaret-sur-Mer, Brittany and St Ives. Throughout this time there have been a number of visits and collaborations such as the 2013 artist t-shirt design project and the young surfers exchange visit. This September the Town Council will be hosting a small delegation from Camaret-sur-Mer and running a number of events. We are looking forward to an inspirational visit to strengthen and learn from the connection with our friends across the channel.
Councillor Andy Dale, the Chairman of the Council’s Community and Environment Committee sponsoring the exchange said
In difficult times, more than ever, we value the connections we have with other communities and nations. Camaret and St Ives are both maritime towns with a strong connection to the sea, celebrating their artistic past and Celtic heritage. We are looking forward to marking the longevity of this connection with our friends across the sea.
We would like to invite the people of St Ives Parish and beyond to take part in this celebration by designing a postcard of your view of St Ives. The postcards will be exhibited at the Penwith Gallery. You can draw, paint, collage or use any other medium that suits you.
All of the postcards will be displayed at the Twinning event at Penwith Gallery on Sunday 25th September where we say goodbye to the delegates from Camaret after their visit, and our favourite from each category (0-10 years, 11-17 years and over 18’s) will be turned into a print and sold to raise money for future twinning events. You can pick up a blank postcard from either St Ives Library, the Guildhall or Penwith Gallery and return your entry to those locations by midday on 23rd September. The category favourites will be announced by 24th September.
Please note that by submitting your postcard to the exhibition you are donating your work to the twinning project, giving permission for St Ives Town Council to use it for publicity and display purposes, and if your work is chosen then you are giving full reproduction, printing and sales rights over to the Town Council. You will be acknowledged as the artist in all publicity and sales.
The Town Council has also created a Facebook Community Page to develop the friendship where you can share your experiences, ask questions and make connections with the community of Camaret-sur-Mer. Here is the link to the page or search St Ives and Camaret-Sur-Mer Twinned Towns Community.
