Saturday 25th March – Flight Day
The Island, St Ives – 1pm-3pm
There’s something special about St Ives in spring. Clear, expansive skies and fresh sea air. As the clocks go forward and we leap into the new season, it’s the ideal time to blow away the cobwebs and embrace the elements with a fun, free activity for all – which can only mean one thing: St Ives Kite Fest is back for 2023!
Come along to the Kite Making Workshops at St Ives Library on Saturday 18th March to build and decorate your own kite with help from ‘The Kite Doctor’ Billy Wynter and textile artist Jo McIntosh, then bring your creation up to The Island on Saturday 25th and send it into the skies for Flight Day.
Kneehigh Theatre started the first St Ives Kite festival day in 1991. It was a community project led by Anna Maria Murphy and, amongst other designer-makers and artists, Billy ‘Dr Kite’ Wynter, who also collaborated on the second Island Kite Day event, with local artist Joanna Mayes over 10 years ago.
In 2022, Kite Fest returned as part of St Ives Town Council’s programme of Welcome Back events and is now back for it’s second year.
All kites will be welcome at the Island for Flight Day, whether you buy one or build one at our workshops (where all materials will be provided). If you would like to build your own at home, a step-by-step kite making guide is available to download below.
