Palemon Best or Penbeagle Rec is an important community open space, bequeathed to the Town by the late Dr Palemon Best. The recreation ground is managed by the Town Council, acting as sole trustee of the Charity. Facilities at the recreation ground include:
- A state of the art concrete skate park (built 2021)
- Cycle racks
- Water refill station and fountain
- Football field (minis / junior size)
- Childrens’ play area (with swings, slides, roundabout, zip wire and more).
- Benches and picnic areas
- Occasional pop up food truck and cafe
- Informal wooded areas
The rec is next to the community orchard which hosts community events and welcomes volunteers, who want to get involved in their work of tree planting and managing the community orchard. They host annual community events like Apple Day and Apple Wassail. St Ives Community Orchard Website
Just above the orchard and skate park there is a large area of open scrub and heath land that leads up to Carnstabba Hill that has a granite Tor and rock outcrop. The St Ives Community Orchard group are seeking to extend their management into this area and have it recognised as a Nature Reserve to ensure it remains in its current wild state http://www.stivesorchard.co.uk/nature-reserve/
